How It Works

Our fun and fuss-free way to build great readers

At Kluwell, we’ve created a simple, effective way to build strong reading habits in primary-aged children while bringing teachers, students, and families together.

Our My Home Reading journals are more than just logbooks, they’re a proven system that encourages kids to read regularly, supports parents/guardians at home, and gives teachers a clear view of each student’s progress throughout the year.

How to use in the Classroom

  • Each student receives a journal
  • Students record their reading each night, with help from someone at home
  • Parents/guardians write short comments about the reading experience
  • Teachers collect the journals weekly or fortnightly to review and comment
  • Progress can also be tracked using our Classroom Readicator Charts, with one free per class set of journals (when purchased directly through Kluwell Publications)

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Kluwell journals different?

Our journals feature a proven visual reward system with stickers and awards to motivate students, backed by reading tips, progress tracking, and inclusive design. They’re colourful, durable, and support readers at every stage, from Yellow to Orange levels.

What’s the difference between the three journals?

The three journals offer a developmental approach across the whole school where as the student gains maturity so does the level of student independence.

The information in the YELLOW LEVEL is written to assist the parent/guardian. The GREEN LEVEL is written to further reinforce ideas promoted in the YELLOW LEVEL, with the student moving towards reading independence. The ORANGE LEVEL is written for the student, as they have ideally reached reading independence. However, if a student requires help and guidance with reading, it is important that the parent/guardian builds on everything promoted in their learning journey.

There are unique stickers & rewards included in every journal.

Why record ‘nights read’ rather than pages?

We focus on frequency—not volume. By counting nights read, students of all abilities can participate and reach awards based on consistency.

How long does the journal last?

Each journal lasts the full school year, with over 330 spaces to track reading. It’s made to be durable and easily identifiable.

How do we prevent journals from getting lost?

With consistent teacher implementation and a well-motivated classroom, journals are seldom misplaced. Students take pride in tracking reading and earning rewards.

How do I implement this program in my classroom or school?

Kluwell recommends an early-year parent/guardian session to explain how the journals work. A downloadable user guide—including a photocopiable handout—is available to support this process. Classroom teacher promotion is the key!

Who can run the reading program?

Implementation can be led by a literacy coordinator, classroom teacher, principal, or even a parent/guardian who introduces journals to the school. Coordination across staff helps ensure wider adoption.

Which year levels are covered by each journal?

Yellow: First 3 years of school (approx. Foundation to Year 2)
Green: Years 3-4
Orange: Years 5-6
Teachers can adapt levels to fit different school structures.

What are good constructive comments like?

Always aim for positive feedback. Instead of saying “This book was boring,” suggest ways to improve it, like “I thought the story could be more exciting if…”. Sample comments appear in the journal, and we even reward excellent ones!

Who should write the weekly comments and awards?

Teachers usually fill out end-of-week comments and manage awards. Teachers can also involve others (school captains, leaders) to present awards, reinforcing motivation.

How is reading progress recorded?

Students record each night read as a progressive count. If a night is missed, nothing is recorded. The goal is ongoing consistency.

Can I order now and pay later?

Yes—schools can place orders at the end of one school year and arrange payment at the beginning of the next.

When will the order arrive?

Orders are usually dispatched within 24 business hours after payment (Mon-Thurs). Custom tracking details are provided following dispatch.

Where do I purchase the journals?

Journals and all resources are available on our website—just head over to the “Shop” section to place your order.
